How to Read Wavelength and LED Specifications

A Plain-English Guide to Comparing Light Therapy Devices

Light therapy product pages often display numbers such as wavelength, LED count, wattage and irradiance. These details can be useful, but a larger number does not automatically mean a better device.

Here is what the main specifications actually tell you.

Wavelength

Wavelength is measured in nanometers, or nm.

Common examples include:

  • Red light: approximately 620–700 nm

  • Near-infrared light: approximately 700–1,100 nm

  • Blue light: approximately 400–470 nm

Wavelength tells you the type of light a device emits. It does not tell you how strong the device is or what results it will produce.

LED Count

LED count shows how many light-emitting components are inside the device.

More LEDs may help improve coverage, but LED count alone does not measure light intensity or effectiveness.

Also check whether the total includes different colors or wavelengths. A device with 180 LEDs may divide them between red, blue and near-infrared modes.

Irradiance

Irradiance describes how much light reaches a surface and is usually measured in mW/cm².

This number is only useful when the manufacturer also states:

  • Measurement distance

  • Active light mode

  • Whether the figure is an average or maximum reading

An irradiance number without these details can be misleading.

Wattage

Electrical wattage is not the same as optical light output.

A large wattage figure may include energy used by displays, fans and other electronic components. It should not be treated as proof that more light reaches the skin.

Treatment Time and Distance

Distance and session duration affect how much light reaches the intended area.

Use the device according to its instructions rather than extending sessions or moving it closer in an attempt to increase exposure. More light is not necessarily better.

Do Specifications Prove Results?

No.

Specifications describe how a device is designed. They do not, by themselves, prove that it will produce a particular cosmetic, wellness or medical outcome.

Be cautious of products that promise guaranteed results or claim to treat medical conditions without suitable evidence and authorization.

What to Look For

A clear product specification should include:

  • Exact wavelengths

  • LED distribution

  • Recommended session time

  • Recommended treatment position

  • Intended treatment area

  • Clear safety instructions

The best device is not always the one with the highest number. It is the one with transparent specifications, realistic claims and a routine you can use consistently.
